Hunting With Adventure Northwest
Grizzly Bear Hunt – An Unforgettable Northern Experience
Step into the wild expanse of the Arctic tundra, where the thrill of the hunt and the awe of nature combine in a rare opportunity to pursue the barren ground grizzly. Known for its sheer power and unyielding spirit, this elusive bear roams the vast terrain of Nunavut, making it a prized challenge for hunters seeking a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Meet the Barren Ground Grizzly
Standing 3.5 feet on all fours and towering at 6.6 feet on its hind legs, this grizzly is a force to be reckoned with. Weighing between 330 and 850 pounds and capable of reaching speeds of up to 40 mph, it’s built to thrive in its rugged environment. Equipped with an incredible sense of smell and hearing, the barren ground grizzly is both elusive and formidable—a true testament to the wilds of the Arctic.
The Hunt of a Lifetime
Each spring, a select group of hunters has the privilege to pursue this legendary predator. Using snow machines, you’ll cover miles of frozen tundra to track your target—an advantage that allows you to reach areas only accessible during the cold season. The terrain is challenging, and each hunt is shaped by unpredictable elements like caribou migration patterns and weather conditions, making every outing unique. Guided by expert trackers, you’ll travel in wooden sleds outfitted with shock absorbers to ensure the journey is as comfortable as possible.
The barren ground grizzly may not reach the size of coastal grizzlies, but it more than matches them in aggression and courage. This is a bear that fears no other creature, man included. Exceptional specimens can grow up to eight or even nine feet, making them among the most prized trophies in the world of hunting.
Legendary Hunts and Record-Breaking Moments
This is a region with a history of remarkable hunts. In 2002, one of our hunters, Mike Deschamps, harvested a barren ground grizzly that is believed to be the #1 grizzly taken with a bow. His feat highlights the unique challenge and thrill of this hunt. In 2004, hunters May and Ned Timmons braved sub-zero temperatures to take two representative bears of the region—a testament to the commitment and spirit this adventure demands.
