Hunting With Adventure Northwest

Embark on a Legendary Caribou Hunt in the Untamed North

There is something about watching a few thousand caribou move across the ancient hills of the arctic tundra that awakens a sense of awe in the mind of every person that has ever witnessed it. Like ants moving and mingling, velvet antlers weaving and dancing amongst the mass of living creatures. It’s impossible to not be impressed by one of nature’s greatest phenomena: the caribou migration.

The Bathurst Caribou Herd

The Bathurst Caribou herd has been a symbol of life in the arctic for thousands of years, sustaining the original Inuit people long before North America was “discovered.” At its peak in 1987, the herd was a magnificent 470,000 animals strong, and residents of the Northwest Territories enjoyed liberal bag limits of 5 caribou per hunter.

The Decline and Our Shift to Nunavut

The 1990s and early 2000s saw an influx of outfitters moving to the Northwest Territories in search of the magnificent caribou. Adventure Northwest set up camps at White Wolf, Little Marten, Thonikied, and Lac du Rocher and enjoyed some fantastic caribou hunting until the Northwest Territories shut down all nonresident caribou hunting on Jan 1, 2010, citing dwindling caribou numbers.

Establishing Our Camp in Nunavut

We were ahead of the curve and had already set up a camp on the Nunavut Territory side of the border and found the hunting to be even better than any of the other camps. We set up camp on Pellatt Lake, which straddles the Northwest Territories and Nunavut Territory border, and later moved to the much larger Contwoyto Lake in 2013. We hunted this area until 2019 when our Bathurst herd caribou tags were pulled from our quota.

Our New Location and 2024 Success

In 2023, Adventure Northwest was able to secure some tags for the Beverly herd, but this meant moving camp once again. This time to the east onto the Back River system. We set up on Beechey Lake in 2024 and had a great first season there. While we don’t see the large congregated herds anymore, we had a fairly steady flow of mature caribou all season long.

Comfortable Camp in the Arctic Wilderness

Camp still consists of the weather-tested and proven Arctic Oven tents. It has a generator for power and heat in all the tents. It’s a pretty comfortable camp considering where you are hunting.

World-Class Caribou Hunting

Trophy Caribou Taken in Our Camps

Our hunters have taken the SCI world record caribou, scoring almost five hundred inches, the Pope and Young number 3 all-time, as well as numerous other caribou that rank high in the record books. The new camp also proved to be good for trophy quality, and we killed both Pope and Young and Boone and Crockett caribou.

Hunter Success Rate

For years now, we have enjoyed nearly 100% hunter success with both archery tackle and rifle hunters alike. Most rifle shots are under 300 yards. Archery hunters should take time to practice in windy conditions as much as possible before coming on the hunt. Most shots taken at caribou are more than 50 yards given the open nature of the terrain.

Beechey Lake: Heart of the Beverly Herd Range

Our camp on Beechey Lake sits 280 miles northeast of Yellowknife, far above the tree line, in the heart of the Beverly caribou herd range.

Terrain and Weather Conditions

The terrain is generally dry and rocky. No hip waders are necessary, but sturdy waterproof hunting boots are a must. Temperatures can range from 32°F to 75°F in late August and down to 25°F to 40°F by mid-September.

Wildlife and Fishing Opportunities

We encourage all hunters to purchase tags for wolf, wolverine, and ptarmigan. The lakes and streams also provide outstanding fishing opportunities for Lake Trout and Grayling.

Transportation and Safety Measures

Travel to Camp

Transportation around the hunting area is done by aluminum boats. These boats allow us to travel around the 30-mile-long lake and cover a large amount of country. We have life jackets and do not allow any travel in the boats without one.

Communication and Safety Devices

Every guide is equipped with a Garmin Inreach GPS and communication device for safety and efficiency. You are welcome to keep in touch with your family with these devices. We now also have WIFI in camp to allow you to stay connected with your loved ones.

Schedule and Hunt Details

Arrival and Setup

The morning you are scheduled to fly into camp, you will be picked up at the hotel of your choice in Yellowknife and transferred to the charter plane base for the 100-minute flight to camp, arriving early to midafternoon. For flights with wheeled aircraft, there will be a 20-minute boat ride to camp. Please have your rain gear handy for this boat ride.

Daily Routine

Once at camp, you will be shown your sleeping quarters and explained the basics of camp life. Each morning of your hunt, you are expected to be ready for breakfast at 6:45am. There will be a selection of lunch foods ready for you to pack for your day's hunt. The guides try to be back at camp at 6:00pm for dinner, giving you approximately 10-11 hours of hunting every day.

Departure

Upon the completion of your hunt, the plane will leave camp early in the afternoon for your return to Yellowknife. You will then be transferred to the hotel.

Important Notes

      .
