Hunting With Adventure Northwest

Embark on a Legendary Caribou Hunt in the Untamed North

Imagine trekking through the vast, open tundra, surrounded by the fiery hues of autumn, as crisp arctic air fills your lungs. Adventure calls in one of the world’s last truly wild places, where only a few have journeyed. With expert Inuit guides at your side, you’ll learn to track and hunt the majestic caribou, following age-old techniques passed down through generations. This is more than just a hunt—it’s a chance to immerse yourself in a rugged, awe-inspiring landscape few get to experience.

Our camp is located on Contwoyto Lake, 250 miles northeast of Yellowknife, sitting just above the treeline in the heart of three caribou ranges. Here, in some of the most prime caribou territory, you’ll find two large tents, four smaller guest tents, and a dedicated cook’s tent where you’ll enjoy delicious meals, often featuring fresh caribou and fish caught from nearby lakes. Your adventure includes six days in the north, with five full days dedicated to tracking your prized caribou.

What Makes the Hunt Special

Caribou are powerful, resilient creatures, with sturdy bodies that allow them to withstand extreme cold and rugged terrain. Their massive antlers can weigh up to 35 pounds, and both males and females carry these striking racks, a unique trait among deer species. Known for their herd mentality and impressive agility, caribou can reach speeds of 50 mph, a remarkable sight on the tundra’s wide, open plains. On this hunt, you’ll witness firsthand the awe-inspiring strength and endurance of these animals as they migrate and graze across the expansive landscape.

A True Wilderness Adventure

After a scenic boat ride, you’ll hike inland to glass and spot caribou, using natural high points along the tundra’s eskers and ridges to get within range for an unforgettable shot. This setting is ideal for both rifle and bow hunters, who will appreciate the terrain’s close-range opportunities. For those eager for more, we encourage hunters to purchase tags for wolf, wolverine, and ptarmigan, while our nearby lakes offer outstanding fishing for lake trout, arctic char, and grayling.

Practical Information for the Hunt

  • Terrain: Generally dry and rocky; sturdy, waterproof hunting boots are essential.
  • Weather: Temperatures range from 32°F to 75°F in late August, cooling to 28°F to 40°F in September. Pack accordingly to stay comfortable.
  • Travel: Your adventure starts in Yellowknife, where we’ll pick you up at your hotel for a 90-minute floatplane ride to camp. After the hunt, we’ll guide you through obtaining export permits and paying trophy fees.

Important Notes

Please keep gear under the strict 70-pound limit for floatplane travel. A soft gun case is recommended. Each hunter will receive an export permit for any animal parts brought home. We encourage hunters to respect camp policies, including responsible alcohol consumption and adherence to hunting regulations.
