Hunting With Adventure Northwest
Fall Barren Ground Muskox
The muskox Inuktitut name "Umingmak" translates to "The Bearded One" and after seeing one, it becomes apparent how the name came to fruition. Hair over a foot long cover this prehistoric animal, a survivor directly from the ice age. The arctic is a beautiful but unforgiving place to inhabit, the muskox does not merely exist in these conditions, but thrives!
Adventure Northwest has been at the forefront of muskox hunting for over three decades and continues to be a leader. In 2023, the new world record was taken in one of our camps by renowned guide Sam Kapolak and hunter Aron Wark, scoring an incredible 131 4/8.
Adventure Northwest provides a full lineup of muskox hunts to suit everyone. From the traditional winter hunt on snowmobile, to a comfortable summer time hunt in great weather. We routinely hunt both the Barren Ground subspecies as well as the Arctic island, or “Greenland” subspecies. While B&C classifies them as the same species, Safari Club International splits up the subspecies.

Fall Barren Ground Muskox
Fall muskox hunts happen at two different locations, Contwoyto Lake in Nunavut territory and Lynx Lake in the Northwest Territories. Both camps have incredible trophy quality and are priced the same.
Contwoyto Lake – Nunavut
The first hunt on Contwoyto lake is considered to be the best in terms of trophy quality. Not only have we killed the world record here, but also consistently take old mature animals. Hunting pressure is kept to a minimum. Only limiting ourselves to 9 muskox hunters per year to keep up the genetics and quality of game.
Contwoyto lake is nearly 85 miles long and enables us to cover an outstanding amount of real estate while looking for your trophy bull. This camp sits 250 miles northeast of Yellowknife, well above the treeline, in the heart of mega muskox country.
This is a comfortable tent camp with experienced inuit guides who know the area well. The tents are heated if needed.
Lynx Lake – Northwest Territories
The second hunt is in the Northwest Territories on the edge of the treeline on Lynx Lake. This is the start of the famed Thelon river and known for its abundance of wildlife and untamed beauty.
This area of the NWT has only been open to muskox hunting since 2022 and has produced some giant trophies! Adventure Northwest rents an entire fishing lodge to operate these hunts from, and it makes for a super comfortable hunt with hot showers, cabin accommodations and a kitchen lodge area. If you're taking your wife on an arctic adventure, this is the hunt for it!
Hunt Success & Conditions
For years now in both locations, we have enjoyed nearly 100% hunter success with both archery tackle and rifle hunters alike. Most rifle shots are under 300 yards. Archery hunters should take time to practice in windy conditions as much as possible before coming on the hunt. The majority of shots taken at muskox are more than 40 yards given the open nature of the terrain.
The terrain is generally dry and rocky. No hip waders are necessary, but sturdy waterproof hunting boots are a must. Temperatures can range from 40°F to 75°F in August. We encourage all hunters to purchase tags for wolf, wolverine and ptarmigan. The lakes and streams also provide outstanding fishing opportunities for Lake Trout and Grayling.
Transportation around the hunting area is done by aluminum boats. These boats allow us to travel around the large lakes and cover a large amount of country. We have life jackets and do not allow any travel in the boats without one.
Every guide is equipped with a Garmin Inreach GPS and communication device for safety and efficiency. You are welcome to keep in touch with your family with these devices. We now also have starlink WIFI in camp to allow you to stay connected with your loved ones.

Schedule
The morning you are scheduled to fly into camp, you will be picked up at the hotel of your choice in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories and transferred to the charter plane base for the 90-minute flight to camp, arriving early to midafternoon. For flights with wheeled aircraft to the Contwoyto Lake camp there will be a 30-minute boat ride to camp. Please have your rain gear handy for this boat ride. Once at camp you will be shown your sleeping quarters and explained the basics of camp life. Each morning of your hunt you are expected to be ready for breakfast at 7:00am. There will be a selection of lunch foods ready for you to pack for your day's hunt. The guides try to be back at camp at 6:00pm for dinner, giving you approximately 10-11 hours of hunting every day. Upon the completion of your hunt, the plane will leave camp early in the afternoon for your return to Yellowknife. You will then be transferred to the hotel.
Important Notes
1. There is a strict weight limit of eighty pounds of gear/liquor etc. per hunter, on the floatplanes. Any hunter having gear weighing more than 80lbs may not be able to take all their gear on the plane.
2. Each hunter will be required to obtain an export permit for any part of an animal that is transported out of the Nunavut or Northwest Territories. Adventure Northwest will see to it that this is completed.
